APPLICATION OF BASIC BUILDING SERVICES

PROJECT 1

This is an individual assignment which will work on the basic application of building services. Students are introduced to the four (4) major types of services available, which are essential to make a building function. Each student will be assigned to design the systems required from a building plan given. Firstly, they need to understand how systems in building services work and later apply them by drawing the systems in the plans.

OBJECTIVES

To develop students’ understanding and knowledge of building services and its systems in design and construction.
To apply appropriate building services systems and solution for a specific design.
To demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of applicability of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical considerations.
To develop students’ ability to resolve issues related to specific building services systems.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Identify relevant systems related to water supply, electrical supply, sewage and storm water management.
Describe the planning of building services within the total design and construction process.
Describe the installation of building services within the total design and construction process.

BUILDING SERVICES IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS

PROJECT 2

This assignment is a group project to perform an analysis on building services systems found in multi-storey buildings. Students will be introduced to systems that are used on bigger volume of spaces and variety of users. This exercise requires students to develop a design from their design studio project and incorporating the systems to the building. It is important for the students to understand the mechanism of the systems to produce a comprehensive and informative report.

OBJECTIVES

To introduce students to the basic principles, process and equipment of various building services systems found in buildings (experiential learning).
To expose students to the integration of various building services systems in a building.
To allow students to demonstrate their understanding of building services systems and statutory requirements (UBBL).
To develop students’ understanding and familiarization in applying the correct graphic communication standards (MS1184)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, mechanical transportation system as well as fire protection systems.
Understand the functions and purposes of building services systems.
